Gift Shops are the Devil: How to Deal with Souvenirs & Spending on Vacation with Kids

My kid: “I swear I will use this can of fog every day, PLEASE Mom can I have it!” Every destination is about buying stuff and snacks. I can’t deal. How many times can I say it:

“This trip IS YOUR PRESENT!!!”

It’s kind of not their fault. We’re channeled through gift shops like cattle. The Vatican sells shot glasses and this apron for God’s sake:

I decided I needed to make the souvenir plan  a part of my preparation for traveling so I thought I’d share how we navigate this and I’d love to hear your ideas.

1.We start with a sit down family meeting. I discuss everything that we’re going to do on the trip. We go day by day through the itinerary so that everyone is prepared to pack, understand, and ask questions. I find that while I’m on the trip…navigating from point A to point B, keeping us in Uber’s and fed – it helps to have everyone in the know so that I can make things happen. I think we all like to know what’s going on – little kids are no exception. Of course I always share my TripIt itinerary with anyone on the trip too. (see my Must Have Travel Apps for more info.)

2. Second, I give each kid a budget. For our recent 10 day trip to the East Coast (itinerary here) it was $50 total per kid. They thought that was a small fortune at first until we talked about how it was going to shake out. Goes a lil something like this:

“Max, if you buy one jersey at the Red Sox game – you will blow $45 of your $50 on day 2” <<oh dang face>>

This is a great thing. They brainstorm how they’re going to spend their money and they visualize how that will look and feel. We talk about our favorite “must-have” things from which special stop on our trip and they write down their plan.

For our last few trips my kids have wanted to earn additional money to spend on the vacation so they ended up doing chores so that they could add to the allowance we gave them. I loved this because it really mirrored Paul and my’s efforts to do the same thing in saving for the trip. Felt like we were a little crew.

Sammy’s choice. She’ll never have to wonder where she got it, haha. She went for the something-little-at-every-stop approach.

3.  I’m not your sugar mama. Our rule is that every day the kids are allowed to have one snack and one drink that’s not water. If they choose to have a Slushie or hot chocolate or whatever while we’re out – it’s water for the rest of the day. Most days, my kids picked to save their “special drink” for dinner and their snack for the 3:00 hour.

If you think I sound like a dictator – you’ve clearly never spent any length of time traveling with a 1st grader. Sorry but this $tuff adds up and my bandwidth for “can I…can I…” is low when we’re already paying for travel.

Setting these boundaries up ahead of time is so nice because you avoid meltdowns and 1,344 questions throughout the day. It’s just understood. Ultimately, travel should be about learning and being together on vacation not “What can I buy”. I think a few adults could benefit from this philosophy too;)

I think another way to avoid the drama would be to start some sort of collection. If you started a snow globe collection, it would be understood that they could have a snow globe from each trip. This could turn into a tradition of sorts and it might turn into a treasured collection. I buy Christmas ornaments from everywhere we go. We pick them out together and when we put up the tree every year it’s a hodgepodge of great memories. It’s kinda tacky and I love it.

4. Finally – I have the kids write a little something in a journal on the ride home. I bought 3×4 spiral notebooks for .99 cents. I write down a few questions:

  • What was your favorite memory from the trip?
  • What did you learn?
  • What made you laugh?
  • What is something you will never forget?
  • What was your favorite city and why?
  • What did you discover?

The kids answers really surprised me! It’s fun to read, easy to pack, and I think it will be special to read in a few more years.

Like any other game plan and child rearing in general:  This only works if you do it. Sarcastic I know but…#parenting.

May you all breeze through the BS tchotchkes on your next trip. Leave your tips in the comments:) Thanks for reading!

I LOVE THIS! So far it’s all just been beach trips and trips out west to my family, but I believe this is gold for helping me navigate with the two littles solo and helping J understand funding his “surprises” as he likes to call them every time we walk the boardwalk.

Interesting post. I liked your idea of making a diary for kids with few questions as by doing this we can also get ideas about what our kids are enjoying more on the trip and their interests as well. Keep posting such helpful articles.

If you read my book the foreword is about my genuine fear to publish a book.

Well it's been 6 months and nothing bad has happened to me! No one called the book crap and I received 0 hate emails. In fact, the opposite…I’ve met new friends, rekindled old relationships and learned new skills.

Now it’s your turn, Tell your story, write your song, apply, audition, post the video, start the business, or whatever slightly scares you. Linked in my bio is article I wrote on tips for first-time publishers.

I promise the critics live only in your head.

This isn’t the destination (or outfit) I would have picked but I still did a lot of learning on this trip…
✨ one on one time w/ my kids is priceless
✨ being cheesy is worth my pride
✨ even in Paris there are “Disney people”😱
✨ taking time off work is always the right move
✨ My dream job: Disney landscaper
✨ If you want to have a magical experience (and mindset) you have to create it
✨ my kids are my teachers
✨ Disney food blows
✨ all things are cuter in French
✨ always jump on the hotel bed w your kid
✨ “Gay Men Do Disney” needs to be a show on Netflix immediately 🌈
✨ I have walked a LOT during my travels but this was nexttt level
✨ never say never
✨ hit record when you play “Heads Up”
✨ 40 is the age when roller coasters feel like being trampled by a herd of horses

All of these adventures and learning and all of this beauty but tbh I just wish I could spend Mother’s Day with my mom. It’s not all magic genie lamps and tea in the Sahara desert…it’s missing out on fighting with my brothers over the corner cinnamon roll and not being there to see my nephews first steps. Here’s a happy picture and a sad caption…because that’s what this ::really:: is.

Being here during Ramadan has been so interesting. Some people say don’t travel during this time but I disagree. It wasn’t too hot and the sunset was even more beautiful as we watched people come together to break their fasts.

Today I am an Amazon #1 bestselling author in 3 categories!!! 🥇 I don’t have a Ph.D., or a publisher, or an editor, and I’m not an expert (whatever that even means). I had a Google doc. YOU CAN DO ANYTHING 📕

A Google doc - do you hear me? I’m overwhelmed with gratitude. You really can do anything.

Watch this again but imagine you’re my daughter. Yeah, that’s my real #1.

BOOK LAUNCH day is Friday 1.28 📕

These students (and hundreds more) were my inspiration for writing this book. As a teacher for 10 years, I wished I could spend a semester abandoning curriculum to talk about what really matters: relationships, forging your own path, ditching people that drain you, mental health, and authenticity. I would have called that class "Your Grades Don't Matter" and it would have been fire and I would have been fired, ha.

This book is that class. It's a guide for high school upperclassmen (and a great reminder for all ages really) on being fearless, understanding your negativity bias, leaving your dorm room door open, befriending your advisor, and taking care of your thoughts. It's a real-talk reminder that none of us know what we're doing and you don't have to have it all figured out.

I interviewed some of my former students and included their names and quotes in the book. When I was tired or discouraged in writing, I would picture them seeing their name in print and it would light a fire for me.

After years of buying sh*t Target graduation cards, this book is what I wished I could have given these students. It's years late but it's for you.

The book is titled :: Have Fun, Be Safe, I Love You :: because everything else will work out juussst fine.

“Mama, in my class everyone says they are café con leche. But they say I’m just leche.”
—
Café con leche is a popular Spanish coffee order that is half hot milk and half coffee - combining to create a light brown color. Sam is “just milk” aka “white”. Blue eyes. American. English speaking. Other.
—
Moving here has taught us what being “other” feels like.
—
“Other” feels lonely. “Other” makes you seek out your fellow “others” to feel seen. “Other” is a struggle with language, rules, culture, and fitting in. It’s feeling lost when people talk too fast and inferior for not knowing. “Other” is constant and hard.
—
BUT being on the outside builds empathy. Being an “other” means you have a superpower to see those standing outside the circle and a deep desire to invite them in. It means you wait in the “foreigners” line to file paperwork and hold “others” babies while they dig out their copious amounts of paperwork - without judgement. “Other” has strengthened our connections with others and within ourselves.
—
We might be “just leche” but we’re definitely whole. 😉 Living as “other” is a gift but I also recognize that it’s something that we can easily change by moving back. Not everyone has this “other shape-shifting” ability.
—
So cheers to the café con leches, the soy milks, boba teas, chai lattes, and espressos. And cheers to struggles!! It’s where the real magic and growth happens.

I heard on NPR years ago a study of happy people. What the majority of them had in common was they all had something they were looking forward to.
Think about what gets you through the week? It’s the excitement for the next thing: Friday happy hour, a concert, a wedding, or a trip.
The pandemic took away my ability to look forward to things and it really put into perspective how much of my happiness revolves around a countdown. The dreaming, anticipating, research, and planning is half the fun.

I hope you’ve got something good in the hopper😉
